Branches on the Tundra

The Student Planning Committee has been hard at work for months to plan the Branches concert on the Tundra. Yesterday was finally the day of the concert and I am very excited with how everything turned out.

Branches is a folk-rock band out of California that has been compared to the likes of “Death Cab for Cutie,” “The Lumineers” and “Mumford and Sons.” Branches have been featured on shows such as, “Cougar Town” and “One Tree Hill.” SPC discovered Branches at the National Association for Campus Activities national conference in February 2014 and were thrilled for the fun-loving band to make a visit to Ada.

The Student Planning Committee holds Open Mic Nights every semester to feature the talent of ONU students. We wanted to bring the student talent to the concert and requested past participants of Open Mic Night to be the opening acts for Branches. The student opening acts were a great addition to the concert.

To create the atmosphere at the concert, we decided to create a carnival theme to match the whimsical aspects of the band. We bought a cotton candy machine, ordered gallons of Shirley’s popcorn and had fresh lemonade. In addition, we strung outdoor lights on the Tundra that helped light up the space and created great photo opportunities.

When Branches hit the stage, the crowd seemed very excited to hear familiar songs  such as, “Skinny Love,” “Halo” and “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” Branches also sang orginal whimsical creations that seemed to also be popular with the crowd.

The concert was a success and SPC has received many requests to bring Branches back to ONU soon.

  1. Mariah, This concert was AMAZING!! I thoroughly enjoyed it! SPC did a wonderful job putting this concert on. I loved the student openers and the carnival-like atmosphere! Branches was incredible. I love discovering new music and this band is definitely at the top of my list. I spent this morning looking at their website and downloading some of their music! I will definitely come to more events like this that SPC puts on. Thanks for your hard work!!
