Real-Time Engagement with Layar

This weeks reading in Real-Time Marketing & PR discussed going mobile in real-time. People can be engaged in real-time some of the time, but once they go on their phones they can be engaged in real-time all the time. A great majority of the US population has a smartphone and is constantly using it, so what better way to have real-time market engagement.

The book discusses an app on IPhone called “Layar.” Layar uses your GPS application to show real-time information about nearby sites. To use the app, you simply point your phones camera around you and it will show you different restaurants, clubs, real estate for sale, tourist’s sites and entertainment around you. Layer partnered with real-time vendors who supply the content in the application, such as In-n-Out Burger and even colleges.

I decided to download the app and drive down the main street of Ada. I discovered two pitfalls with the app. One, it probably only works in large cities because I did not recognize anything in Ada. Two, it only works when the phone is steady; therefore, it is not ideal when you are in a car. Though if you were in a place like Chicago, it would probably be really helpful because you would probably be on foot and near vendors that support the app.

I went onto the Layar website for even further information. It says you can now scan some print advertising and content and then make a purchase on your phone of the items you scanned. Layar has interactive print in magazines such as, Glamour, Seventeen and Men’s Health.

The ability to reach people in real-time is becoming more and more relevant. It will be neat to see the next step in mobile real-time engagement.
